Can HMRC check your bank account without your permission? HMRC has the power to check personal information about taxpayers they’re investigating by issuing a ‘third party notice’ to banks and other institutions.
Do banks report deposits to HMRC?
Your bank will of course tell them your rough account balance by paying you a tiny amount of interest, which is reported to HMRC. Having money isn’t a crime – not reporting it so you pay the right tax is.
Does HMRC know my savings?
HMRC use information provided to them directly by banks and building societies about any savings interest income you receive. They may use this to send you a bill at the end of the tax year (the P800 form) and/or to amend your tax code.
